742.0. "FDDI-Ethernet-5900 question" by CSOA1::SHEPPARD () Mon Oct 12 1992 16:40

I have a couple of questions about the following configuration.
    Respones will be appreciated.

                      ---------- ------------
            ---- | Bridge | | DEC |

    Fiber ---- | DECHUB | | 5900 |
    to MAIN ---------- ------------
    BLDG |
                                                   |
                                                   |
                                            -------------
                                           | FDDI |
                                     ------| concentrator|-----
                                     | ------------- |
                                     | |
                                     | |
                               HP workstation HP workstation

Currently, the customer had PC's and the HP workstations connected to
the DECHUB via 10BASET. He would like to build a FDDI workgroup between
the HP's and the 5900. This is an Ultrix/TCP/IP environment.

First of all, from what I have read it would appear that this is a good
    configuration. Is this true?

In doing this, would all traffic on the FDDI not get passed to the Ethernet
    side?

Would the HP workstation be able to access the Ethernet if desired?

There was some verbage about the 5900 being able to act as a router
between the two networks. Is software required for this? If so, what
    would be the part number?

    Thanks in advance,

    Brad
