693.0. "PENRIL competition" by KCBBQ::MULLIN () Sun Sep 06 1992 12:57

    			Competitive Questions

    I have a customer who decided on DecBridges 620,He recently recieved a
    comparison of the DEC 620 and the Penril 2500. The customer has
    indicated that the price for the above device is signifcantly cheaper
    and from the chart below, believes it provides signifcant functionality
    benefits. The customer had signed a letter of intent, and was waiting
    for final approval, when he got a visit from the competition. His
    approval to cut the PO will occur in the next 2 weeks, I need to get
    our response to him ASAP. Thanks, in advance

    Obviously, the comparison is one sided, I would like to know any
    details on the product, specifically the details outlined and if there
    is any price comparisons would be helpful.

I'll take a stab at correcting this list of "features" since whoever filled
it out (Pentril?) didn't have ANY information on the DECbridge. PMs please
correct any mistakes I make.

Debbie

    Does anyone have any pricing information on the Penril 2500?

    Their posted performance numbers on their data sheet shows aggregate
    forwarding at 59,520 pps (14,880 x 4). Aggregate filtering rate at
    505,950 pps, Ethernet filtering 14,880 pps/port, FDDI filtering 446,420
    pps. We will not be able to use performance as a DECbridge advantage.

I just rounded out Debbie's list.

Looks like they already have their heart set on Penril 2500 based on the
one-sidedness.

693.4Ours is only over engineered...CGOS01::DMARLOWEPDP 11: MOV -(PC),-(PC)Thu Sep 10 1992 16:399
    Just how important is hot swap (other than in the customer's eyes)
    when the worst component in the DECbridge series is the fan assembly.
    It's rated at 72,000 hours (read 8 years) MTBF. I know, I know,
    MTBF is a statistic that doesn't mean anything if you happen to
    be the one whos bridge went down after only 2 years.

    I won't touch functionality.  8^)

693.5Anything we could add?WLW::SEITZThe system is a NetworkThu Sep 10 1992 20:432
    Are there any features which we have that are not on the list? I'm sure
    the list is one sided because Penril supplied it to the customer.
693.6A feature for usSTAR::GAGNEDavid Gagne - VMS/LAN DevelopmentFri Sep 11 1992 00:452
    Is the "ring purger" a feature that we have and they don't?
    If so, isn't that a big deal?
693.7WAHOO::LEVESQUEGeneral Purpose Icky Tasting MedicineFri Sep 11 1992 09:556
 The only way to improve our position relative to the competitor in the
customer's eyes is to provide a list of added value that we have that they don't.
Someone familiar with the product should be able to provide such a list.
If the PENRIL box is really that much better AND is cheaper, then we ought
to find out exactly what the problem is with respect to our ability to compete in
the marketplace, before we are all looking for jobs...
693.8What about forwarding rate??MSDOA::REEDJohn Reed @CBO - DTN: 367-6463 = DNISFri Sep 11 1992 14:417
    I didn't see anything about actual performance listed in the Penril
    Specs. Can it keep up with the data rates on all of it's ports?
    Perhaps listing the forward and filter rates would be enlightening.
    Ask a customer who has some, how they like them, and what their MTBF
    might be also. Perhaps they NEED hot swap...

From what I understand, they claim full rate forwarding and filtering -- which
incidentally we do NOT (on the 6xx that is).

693.10Consider DECNIS 600?LEVERS::PAQUETTEFri Sep 18 1992 09:2353
Folks,
	Let's not forget that we've Program announced FDDI for the DECNIS 600.
Sure the DECNIS 600 is an integrated bridge/router, and to compare it to the
Penril is a bit of an apples/oranges comparison, but if you look at the
application of the Penril box in the whole network, there may be other vendors'
routers at the next level up from these bridges. Please consider selling the
DECNIS 600 as the integrated bridge/router solution in these areas too.
	Please contact Richard Benwell (RDGENG::BENWELL) for product dates, and
feel free to contact me for technical details. I've included a column for the
DECNIS 600 below, and added a few line items of my own to the list

	Mike Paquette
