682.0. "Engine/processor on FDDI cards?" by CGOS01::DMARLOWE (PDP 11: MOV -(PC),-(PC)) Wed Aug 26 1992 02:42

    I assume the boards in the DECconcentrator and the DB500/600 have some
    sort of engine or processor to run things. Are these a dedicated
    engine (something like a ASIC) or are they based on a specific
    processor?

    Responding to an RFP and there is some interest as to how the insides
    are designed.

Give them a copy of the Digital Technical Journal issue on FDDI; that gives a
good overview of some of these.

The concentrator is pretty simple; most of the work is in the FDDI chipset.
The control is provided by a simple 68000 (the slowest version available! that
was all we needed...)

The bridge has several processors, including a bitslice machine to do the
initial sorting of incoming FDDI frames.
