673.0. "OBM on DECbridges" by LSNCSC::WALPEN () Wed Aug 12 1992 07:45

    According to the latest Networks Buyer's Guide, OBM (out-of-band
    management) is available now on DECconcentrator 500.This allow low cost
    management capabilities trough the use of an Ascii terminal connected
    to an RS232 connector on the DECconcentrator box.

    Will this feature be available (sooner or later) on the DECbridge's
    500 or 600 series?

    thanks ,rene

673.1It's being thought ofBONNET::LISSDANIELSWed Aug 12 1992 10:2310
OBM support was being planned for the DECbridge series as a mid FY93 update.

If that schedule hold true remains to be seen after the current budget
revisions.

I support the idea, it would add greatly to the attractiveness of the product.

    The OBM for DECbridges will not use a VT-compatible terminal. Rather,
    it will require an SNMP-based NMS which supports the SLIP protocol. The
    idea behind this new approach is to provide a true alternate path to
    the SNMP Agent in the device.

    The OBM interface for DECconcentrator is expected to migrate to this
    style as well.
673.3What !!???BONNET::LISSDANIELSThu Aug 13 1992 05:0014
I know we asked for SLIP and SNMP support on the OBM port when the
OBM for DECconcentrator was developed.

It is great that the development team listened, BUT I think it would
be wrong to do away with the VT only compatibility. The functionality
should be selectable at installation.

Who is the product manager and project leader for this new effort ?

I want the field to get a chance to vote on this !

673.4Even simpler than SNMP, rs-232.BSS::C_OUIMETTEDon't just do something, sit there!Thu Aug 13 1992 12:5614
    	I second .3; More so than listening to the field, I would think
    that if we asked CUSTOMERS what they wanted, I can't imagine any of
    them requesting that we "do away with that nasty terminal interface,
    please"  :^).

    	I think it's great that we're going to implement SLIP, or PPP on
    the port, and kudos are definitely due; but anytime we FORCE customers
    to purchase expensive management platforms in order to talk to our
    products, we risk losing a customer to a different vendor who offers
    a simpler management interface.

    					My 2 cents, from the peanut gallery.

673.6we need VT support!CTOAVX::BEAULIEUFri Aug 21 1992 13:1812

    You gotta be kidding me. No VT support on the OBM ports on DECbridge
    6XX does not make sense. (At least to my customers, I asked and they
    just bought 12 DECbridge 620s) They monitor the DECbridges through
    DECmcc and SUN NET manager. They need the port as a backup to these
    management systems and just want to hook up in an emergency. They will
    not hook up modems to these ports and call in, it's too expensive for
    them. Has anyone asked the customer base about this?

    regards,

Modification of the Out-of-Band Management function.

It will give us Out-of-Band Management functions via SLIP.
(SLIP = Serial Line IP) Availability being planned for Q3 FY93.

The SLIP support will cause the current VT interface to go away.
Engineering is currently looking on 3:rd party device mgmt tools
using SLIP for PC's/Laptops that are available for $200-300.
This could replace the VT as a low cost mgmt solution.

However, some parameters such as pseudo dip switches and security parameters
will be observable and setable with a simple VT terminal interface now
termed "the local console function". The local console is specifically
intended to assist the user diagnose problems up to and including
establishing communication with a network management station using either
the in-band or out-of-band path.

Cards and letters should be sent to Mark KEMPF::Kempf and Karl DELNI::Pieper
But please do not kill the SLIP effort - we need that for PTT's until they
adapt the GIGAswitch...
