| Ahmed,
I tend to use a book from NAC called "Introduction to Network Performance"
It covers things like Evaluating Network Performance, Response Time,Throughput,
Resource Utilization...Very good indeed..

| Ahmed,
For IP performance, see the following, available via E-net. Excellent
document.

WRL Research Report 92/4
IP Network Performance
Jeffrey C. Mogul
June 1992
Abstract
This report covers the fundamentals of IP network performance, as well
as many of the specific issues faced by implementors, system managers,
and application programmers. Topics include the IP, ICMP, and ARP
layers; the TCP protocol; efficient implementation of transport
protocols; the Network File System (NFS); the Domain Name System (DNS);
and application layers including Telnet, FTP, SMTP (electronic mail),
the X Window System, and the Simple Network Management Protocol
(SNMP). The intent is to give technically skilled readers a firm
understanding of the principles and specifics behind the performance of
implementations of the IP family of protocols.
***NOTE***
This Research Report is an expanded version of one chapter of "The
Internet Systems Handbook", edited by Daniel C. Lynch and Marshall T.
Rose, to be published in 1992 by Manning Publications Co. and
Addison-Wesley Publishing Company.
Due to copyright restrictions, this report is made available for
INTERNAL DISTRIBUTION within Digital Equipment Corporation; it may NOT
be given or sold to customers or other third parties.
Availability:
Normally, WRL reports may be ordered sending mail to
"[email protected]". However, at this time, the
automated reports server is not able to process requests for
restricted-distribution reports.
Hardcopy:
It will take several weeks before printed copies are available.
You may request a copy by sending mail to John Acevedo,
[email protected]. Your message should indicate that
you want to order a hardcopy of WRL report 92/4.
Please include your internal mailstop address in the body of
the message!
PostScript form:
Via anonymous FTP from jove.pa.dec.com:/wrl-docs/rr-92-4.psf
For the TCP-impaired: JOVE::/wrl-docs/rr-92-4.psf
(but we'll know who you are!)
WARNING: The PostScript file generates 145 pages. You should
try to print this double-sided ("duplex"), in order to save
some trees. The LPS-20 PrintServer can do this for you. Even
so, you'll need a big stapler when you're done. Maybe you should
wait for the hardcopy to become available.
I'd be happy to receive comments on the content or presentation of this
report. There's still time to fix major errors before the book goes
to press, and at some later date there might be another revision of the
report.
-Jeff
