651.0. "v3.1 for decbridge500??" by HGOVC::LILLIANTANG () Mon Jul 20 1992 05:11

Some problems were found to be existing with DECbridge 500 v3.0, and in
particular, one problem being 'NVRAM can be corrupted by the operational
microcode', I would hesitate to recommend the customer to upgrade the
firmware especially for those bridges on the backbone. However the
customer needs the support of Appletalk II urgently. When will v3.1 be out?
These problems were announced in Nov 91.
thanks
Lillian

    Lillian,

    The customer will need to upgrade to DECbridge model 510. This
    is a new AP2 board, with more memory, new features and functionality,
    etc. Please refer to your Network Buyers Guide in the FDDI section
    for a full explanation.

    There will not be any more firmware upgrades to the DECbridge model
    500. It has been retired. It is still supported, but customers
    can no longer buy it (this was as of September 30, 1991).

651.2use v3.0 or not??HGOVC::LILLIANTANGWed Jul 22 1992 22:5616
    Kimberly,
    Thanks for the reply. The customer didn't plan to upgrade because they
    would rather spend the money to buy more network equipment.

    Please reconfirm that we should not recommend the customer to upgrade
    the 500 firmware to v3.0 because of the problems - and if they do need
    the appletalk II and other features, they should upgrade the hardware to
    510? I need to clarify this in order to make the right recommendation
    to the customer. Because the customers have read the release notes
    of v3.0 firmware, they find it sufficient for their needs and expressed
    that they do not want to change to 510. They are currently planning to
    buy newer models from us but dont want to spend extra money on existing
    equipment that already satisfies their needs.

    Thanks again, Lillian
