    I'm new to FDDI and this conference, and have some questions. Our
    customer is going to receive a loan of products of (briefly):
    
    q 	desc
    
    2 DEFCN-AC config. FDDI Con Box
      w/ OBM, w/ 3 horiz. ports
    
    2 DEFCN-MB DAS Dual Ring Connec Card
      w/ In-band-mgt and OBR
    
    2 DEFCN-NA FDDI DECconcentrator 500
      4 port module
    
    2 DEFEB-LA DECbridge 620
    
    plus cables and assemblies. 
    
    
    The idea is that they want to spend some time taking measurements and
    experimenting with Rate Throtling. This is in order to prepare a Maint. 
    & Mgt. plan for the FDDI implementation project underway.
    
    What I want to know is what kind of measurements are possible with OBM
    and what the function of rate throtling is? Is this a kin to routing
    line costing or something altogether else?
    
    I looked around (some) but did not see this information. Pointers are 
    welcome and moderators please relocate if necessary. Thanks.

	This testing isn't possible with the current products. Rate limiting is planned for the next release of DECbridge 500/600 Series microcode.

	Projected date: Q2FY93. If you need something more specific, contact the Product Manager, Pravin (DELNI::) Shah. Rate limiting: The purpose of this feature is to prevent the bridge from propagating broadcast storms, and similar events. The idea is to stop (or greatly reduce the rate of) forwarding certain kinds of frames for a period of time, once a pre-determined threshold is exceeded.

	Can the microcode be retro-fitted to the gear once the gear is in place? What effort will that require per unit? Thanks, Dave.

	Yes, using the DECndu utility, which runs on a load host (Today: VMS, ULTRIX RISC, ULTRIX VAX; Soon: SCO UNIX, NETware). Note that adding the OBM interface requires a module swap.

	So, if I understand you correctly, we can load the new microcode from a VMS or Unix host, but we still have a hardware change in store for every bridge (?) Dave Kinneyu

	Does anyone know at what stage of testing they are at regarding Rate Throttling? Tried to contact the product manager and haven't heard yet. The program manager is looking for a comfort level for the DEcember delivery. Dave.
