621.0. "AP3 needed?" by BRAT::BUKOWSKI () Wed Jun 24 1992 12:17

Hello I have a half dozen DEFEB-AA's (500's) that have the following:

    AP rev B01
    NI rev A01
    FI rev A02
    QM rev A01

I tried using NDU to load on a new version of bridge software, but it
didn't work. I was told the problem was due to my AP board, and that
it must be an AP3 board in order for this to work.

    Is this true?
What is the difference in AP vs. AP2 vs. AP3
Can I buy the AP3 via IEG? My field service rep. can't find an AP3.

I am submitting a equipment list tomorrow for an upgrade of
networking hardware and would like to known the part # and cost of the
AP3 board. While I am bothering upgrading the processor board should
I be considering the NI, FI or QM boards. What is the difference
if I would to upgrade them to NI3, FI3 or QM3.

    A quick response is appreciated.
    Thank You,
    MKO Network Management,
    Mike

The DB500 can only run DB500 code. None of the new 5XX/6XX code
will run on it. It can be upgraded to a DB510 by substituting an AP2
    board.

The AP2 has increased code storage space, plus some other improvements.
The AP3 in an AP2 with out-of-band management.

No, the AP3 is not for sale yet. As I understand it, the AP2 will be
phased out when the AP3 is ready.

The NI3 has three Ethernet/802.3 ports (AUI) instead of one
    Ethernet/802.3 port (AUI or Thinwire).

There are 7 variations of FI board:

    SAS ANSI
    DAS ANSI
    SAS Single-mode
    DAS Single-mode
    DAS ANSI/Single-mode
    DAS Single-mode/ASNI
Null FI (Used with NI3 to give a multiport ethernet bridge with no FDDI)

    There is only one QM

Using the NI3 board or any FI board besides the SAS ANSI requires an
    AP2 (or AP3).

    is a half-hour OK? :-)

621.2Where are the AP2'sBRAT::BUKOWSKIWed Jun 24 1992 13:1612

Great response. Thanks.! Now a couple of follow through questions.

So the AP2 module turns my bridge into a 510. Ok good. I assume the
answer is yes, but Will I be able to use NDU to upgrade the bridge
    software with the AP2?

How do I get an AP2? Field Service or IEG? What is the part # and
    cost?

    Thanks again,
    Mike
621.3NDU works with any DECbridgeLEVERS::S_JACOBSLive Free and ProsperWed Jun 24 1992 16:4412
NDU will work with an AP or an AP2. What matters is that you have the
right code for the right target. Use DB500 code for DB500's, DB5XX
code for other 5XX models and DB6XX code for 6XX models.

    An AP2 module is P/N 54-19375-02. I don't know what the price is. I
also don't know how to order one, since I've never done it. There is a
DECbridge 500/600 Series Installation and Upgrade manual that goes over
all the upgrade options. It's part number is EK-DEFEB-IN.

Be aware that the 5XX/6XX series cannot be managed via DECelms. You
need MCC or MSU or some other NMS that uses SNMP.
