| It will work but as soon as they add a third device, they will need a
concentrator. [I have a 6330/DEMFA/DECbridge-500 running that way
right now]

608.2 | Ok for lab setups, not for real people! | MSBCS::KALKUNTE | Ram Kalkunte BXB1-1/D3 | Sun Jun 14 1992 21:19 | 9 |
| It is possible but leads to complex fiber connections which will need to
be engineered rather than configured. Also leads to ring availability
problems when one or more nodes are not functional. I have done some of
this before but I would not recommend this for a customer. I believe
there is an article covering this subject. I don't have the reference
info handy but maybe someone else will post it. I agree that the reasons
have to be understood before recommending the configuration to customers.

608.3 | If only 2 nodes then S-to-S OK | QUIVER::PARISEAU | Luc Pariseau | Mon Jun 15 1992 08:38 | 7 |

If you only have TWO nodes there is NOTHING wrong with an
S to S connection. If one node goes does so does the ring but
who cares, you don't have anybody to talk to anyway!

608.4 | S-S is LEGAL!!! | KONING::KONING | Paul Koning, A-13683 | Mon Jun 15 1992 10:27 | 26 |

ARGH!!!!
This keeps coming up about once every other week. Now I finally know why.
The configuration guide is WRONG. Repeat, WRONG.
An S-S connection is
1. Supported by the ANSI standard
2. Supported by all our products
3. Perfectly reasonable
4. Perfectly sensible
All this provided you remember that it is a TWO station non-extensible
configuration. If that's what you want, and/or you're prepared to buy
concentrator(s) as soon as you want a third station, go for it.
Would someone who knows the author of the Configuration Guide please report
this documentation error? It's causing severe confusion and may well
cause some people to think that DEC doesn't implement the standard correctly
(since it's clear from the standard that the "not recommended" statement
is NONSENSE).
