1. CONFIGURATION
* FINAL NETWORK ENVIRONTMENT:
Future token-ring networks set distributed in 5 floors and joined
to a optic fiber backbone (FDDI) via CNX-500 Proteon Brouters.
* EVOLUTION AND ACTUAL SITUATION:
a) Network began to work with two CNX-500 brouters attached to
the optic fiber backbone. First one joined two token-ring
networks placed in the DPC (one ring is UTP and the other is STP)
with the FDDI backbone; the other one, placed in the second
floor, joined two UTP token-ring networks to the backbone.
This two CNX-500 brouters have occuped their network inteface
slot with:
First CNX-500 brouter:
slot 2 ----> FDDI network interface
slot 1 ----> TKR 4/16 network interface (configured as STP)
slot 0 ----> TKR 4/16 network interface (configured as UTP)
Second CNX-500 brouter:
slot 2 ----> FDDI network interface
slot 1 ----> TKR 4/16 network interface (configured as UTP)
slot 0 ----> TKR 4/16 network interface (configured as UTP)
There is a PC in the STP token-ring (in DPC) configured as 'load
host' for the brouters, offering the bridging/routing software
11.0c version to the CNX-500 via TFTP protocol.

b) Next step was to include in the network 2 more token-rings
placed in the fourth and seventh floors. We configured a third
brouter to give this service. The CNX-500 brouter joined the 'STP
token-ring' in the seventh floor and the 'UTP token-ring' in the
fourth floor to the FDDI backbone.
Began the problems!
The brouter STP interface was hanged during short periods of
time. Result of this was that the ring of the seventh floor was
not available to the rest of the network. Client gave us not a
very good feedback about the traffic in the network. This
situation was solved doing a physical reset of the CNX-500
brouter. But the client was not agree with the working of the STP
interface.

c) Next Step has been to include another CNX-500 joining one
'UTP token-ring' in the first floor to the FDDI backbone. The
brouter has occuped two slots:
slot 0 -----> FDDI network interface
slot 1 -----> TKR 4/16 network interface
We try to join the CNX-500 to the network and ....
- The CNX-500 brouter has not loaded its software, giving a
timeout error. But if we disconnected one of the FDDI connectors
of the brouter interface, no problems and the CNX-500 loaded the
software. Then, we connected again the ring that was out, and the
CNX-500 after run the test of the networks interfaces(UTP and
FDDI) offered availability of them. All the network was O.K.
The software configuration was O.K. (TCP/IP and Source Routing).
Sometimes has given a general error with the router placed in the
DCP (this one was down).
But ..., again, if the brouter has a reset and try to load the
software, it doesn't load and appears the timeout error. If we
repeat the process of disconnect one of the FDDI connectors,
again, no problem and the router load the software ...
We changed the FDDI network interface and put another one. We
reconfigured all again and when the brouter tried to load the
software, the situation was the same, error. Disconnecting one
of FDDI connector, the router load the software ... But the
network in this periods of time was unavoidable.
The client knows that the network is not full operative and
unavoidable at this moment and wants a solution, also asks for
the possible problem of the STP interface of the CNX-500 brouter.
