568.0. "Copper FDDI Standard Update" by LEVERS::B_CRONIN () Wed May 13 1992 10:50

Here is the bi-monthly update on the TP-PMD (copper FDDI) standard.

There was no decision made on an encoding scheme at this meeting. The
reason is fairly simple - the action items necessary to make an
informed decision were not completed. The choices were between MLT-3
    and pre-emphasized NRZI.

One part of this action item was a radiated emissions test. This test
was completed; it was the first time that both of the proposals had
been tested at the same FCC site at the same time. The committee has a
goal of FCC Class B performance. Unfortunately, both proposals failed
to meet Class B in this test. More work is being done to quantify
whether the test had a mistake, or, whether the prior testing had not
    been rigorous enough.

At this time, I have no guess as to when there will be a standard.

568.1IBM SDDI spec hits the streetsDPDMAI::DAVIESMark, SCA Area Network ConsultantThu May 28 1992 09:5921
Bill, the latest copy of Network World has a cover story about IBM's
new copper FDDI spec for STP and the xpectation that they will announce
products this/next week. They call it SDDI. The article says that the
SDDI spec was proposed to the ANSI X3.T9 committee last October and was
rejected because a single standard for STP & UTP was needed.

IBM did not want to wait and has built products around their SDDI spec.
The IBM SDDI spec and the Digital "Gang of 5" spec are different and as
the article states the two sets of products will not interoperate.

Big problem coming since the article states that "DEC will not build
SDDI compliant products because it is not a standard".

Is that statement just a first-time-comment prior to looking the
situation over? Or has DEC really made a decision not to build SDDI
    based products?

    Regards,

    Mark
