505.0. "FP-PC SMT connector rational" by CGOS01::GBARNABE (Guy Barnabe - DIS Canada) Wed Mar 18 1992 00:25

Customer (a telco) is wondering why the FC-PC connector was chosen in favor of
what he called "ST" connectors.

He stated that apparently ST connectors are the preferred connector for Telcos
fiber giblets.

Was it:

	- a Digital decision

	- a proposed FDDI standard

	- somebody flipped a coin   ;^)

505.1Some thoughts on FC/PCPOLAR::HOFFEThu Mar 19 1992 08:0317
    Guy,
    I recall some of the rationale behind choosing FC/PC over competing
    designs. I had done a performance study of FC/PC vs ST singlemode
    connectors. I found little performance difference between the two. I
    presented my results to NaC;they agreed that performance wise,the two
    were similar. One of the key selection factors was that FC/PC is
    physically different than ST and thus customers could not inadvertanly
    plug SM into MM.
    As far as telco's go, there is no truly standard connector. There are
    lots of biconics installed by telcos,lots of ST's,and recently a
    significant number of SC's by some telcos. The FC/PC was and is a
    popular connector for singlemode and for many years was the standard
    connector in Japan. It is also very popular in Europe. I think the
    FC/PC was a good choice.
