488.0. "Rumors and press re: Fiber Channel" by ORACLE::WATERS (I need an egg-laying woolmilkpig.) Thu Feb 27 1992 17:43

Some news that should interest all who are involved with Fiber Channel:

1. Hewlett Packard and IBM have announced a technology and second sourcing
agreement, and the first product will be Rochester's OLC card. The press
release went out early this week, so the trade press should have lots more
about it next week.

2. LAN Times did a study on high speed alternatives to Ethernet, and LAN
Times is not a fan of FDDI.

"FDDI has taken nearly 8 years to solidify, and its performance only
   makes Ethernet marginally envious."

As a result, LAN Times went looking for alternatives to test, one of which
was Ancor's 44 Mbs switch. In the writeup is a discussion of overhead where
Ethernet is stated as approaching 35% of the bandwidth vs Ancor's Fiber
Channel overhead being as low as 2.2%. Despite being less than half the
speed of the 100 Mbs systems tested, Ancor came close to the top of the pack
in performance. Here is the last paragraph of the Executive Summary:

"If you don't have the money and don't need the performance, stick with
   Ethernet."
"If you're starting to get excited about multimedia applications on a
network, wait for the Fiber Channel to come down."

What edition of LAN times is this article in? I have seen information
that we have attained 70Mbps+ using DEMFAs and DECstation DEFZAs. What
did they have driving this test? This seem counter-intuitive.

What standard is Fiber Channel based on? What is its speed?
488.3ANSI X3T9.2TOOHOT::ROCHAWed Sep 30 1992 18:4510
ANSI X3T9.2. Not sure about the the speed but it's gigabit like.

Is this the only conference with anything on this subject? I have a
customer that would like to review the possiblity of a fiber channel
based TURBOchannel card based on the components of .1 above. Anyone
know of any activity in this area?

    Thanks

The July issue of COMPUTER DESIGN ('92) has an article on
"High-performance networks challenge Ethernet". The article appears to
address Fiber Channel, FDDI and ATM (I have a copy but haven't read it
    yet).
