473.0. "Standalone DECbridge 620 ?" by CENPCS::BIRMINGHAM (G.W. Birmingham, Carolinas District) Fri Feb 07 1992 12:11

I have a customer who is planning a FDDI campus ring using a DECbridge
620, and two DECbridge 520's. The DECbridge 620 will support three 10Mb
Ethernets. The cable installation is going to take a while, but he
would like to go ahead and connect the DECbridge 620 to the existing
    Ethernets and get going.

What problems will there be if he does this ? Does the DECbridge 620
need some fiber jumpers to simulate a ring ?

Thanks for any pointers, comments, and suggestions.

    Regards,
    George

    George,

The DECbridges do not need loopback connectors on the FDDI PHY ports to
    bridge from Ethernet to Ethernet.

I believe they are shipped with dust covers to protect the PHY ports
during shipment and installation. These should be left on until
    the cables are installed.

The bridges will respond to management through the Ethernet ports and
indicate the correct ("BROKEN") state of the FI MAC. Once connected,
the bridge's FDDI subsystem will configure itself into the ring and the
port state will transition to "OPERATE" (if the topology rules are
    not violated).
