464.0. "environment & thinwire use" by EVTAI1::GROSSETETE () Wed Jan 29 1992 11:36

    Is there any document which describes the environment limitation
    when using Thinwire cable for a FDDI connection (DEFCN <-> DEFZA) ?

    Let's say we installed a such configuration in a air traffic control
    room with radar over the roof, any problem ???

Clearly if Ethernet would have trouble in that environment, FDDI over coax
will do no better (and in fact worse). There are cable testing procedures
in the installation manual for (I believe) the concentrator -- but that may
not cover interference issues.

One approach is to install something and test it, using the error counters.
That won't help if new sources of interference are installed later, or if
the interference is extremely location-dependent (move the cable a foot and
it changes -- which is quite plausible).

For the sort of application you mentioned, the best answer may well be to
spend the small amount of extra money and use fiber, since that will definitely
give you the best signal integrity.
