Subject: OSF/1 and FDDI I received the following questions from one of my sales reps. Can someone help? (I'm submitting this question to both the OSF and FDDI notes files.) BPX(A) is considering installing our DECcontroller 700 in a DECstation 5000 as a test device for directly connected workstations. Please read the following comments and answer the main question: Main question: Does OSF/1 support the DECcontroller 700? VERY IMPORTANT! Comments: BPX is also looking at HP and IBM FDDI controllers for their respective workstations. Neither is available yet, but will be in the next couple months. HP is priced about $3200 and IBM is about $4200, while Digital is at $5300 after BP's DBA discount ($6492 before discount). BPX has existing HP and IBM workstations, so will need to attach them to FDDI. If we are just plain too expensive for FDDI connectivity, they could opt to not have any DECstations in their network. NOT a pretty picture! Does anyone know any good reasons why: 1. Digital's controller solution is better. 2. Why the huge difference in pricing? 3. Any impending price reduction for DECcontroller 700? 4. How the heck we can compete? --Rick Nelson Sales Support Anchorage Office (907) 257-8011

454.1 | DEC OSF/1 V1.0 supports the DEFZA | MIPSBX::thomas | The Code Warrior | Tue Jan 21 1992 16:01 | 0 |

Note also that the copper cable version of the DEFZA is substantially less expensive. You may also want to see what you can discuss around follow-on plans for the DEFZA, which will in the not too distant future give you higher performance and lower cost. That's unannounced stuff, so talk to the product manager about it... paul |
