My customer is looking at using FDDI as a backbone LAN with 6xxx's "directly" connected using the XMI controllers and front-ends on Ethernets going thru DECbridges. Which layered products will support the XMI/FDDI adaptors? For example, will x.25 access know how to go out the FDDI instead of Ethernet? Would VOTS be able to access the FDDI adaptor instead of the Ethernet one? Would they be "supported"? Is there a list of the DECnet/Ethernet products which will support FDDI or will I have to go to each conference/product manager? (I believe that both products I mentioned will work, but is there "support"?) Thank you for any and all pointers/comments/etc. Terry Stowers, MidAtlantic Telecomm & Util

I don't know what it means for X.25 to "go out over" an Ethernet. If you mean gateway access -- that uses DECnet, and DECnet supports the DEMFA, so the answer would be YES. In many cases the answer is clear: if something uses DECnet, then the rules for DECnet apply. For communications services that access the datalink directly (such as LAT) the answer can be different and you need to find the specific product description. I don't know of a table, and if there were one it might be out of date. Safest is to talk to product managers. paul | |||||

VAX P.S.I. Access should work as long as you've got a version of DECnet-VAX that supports the FDDI device. VAX P.S.I. native over LLC2 requires some minor changes to support any new devices. I'm not sure whether V4.3 has DEMFA support in PSI$L2DM or not, the version bundled with Wave 1 should be ok if you just edit the CSMA_CD device datafile. Eric |
