436.0. "TPDDI/Level V UTP, AT&T 2061" by PCOJCT::BMURPHY () Mon Dec 30 1991 14:46

    Does anyone have any information regarding the reclassification by NEMA
    and ANSI/EIA/TIA TR41.8.1 of AT&Ts 2061 UTP to LEVEL/CATEGORY V?
    Specificly DEC's position on recommended utilization of this cable?

    According to AT&T product announcement literature "Category-5 cables
    require electrical performance testing through 100mhz and are the
    unshielded twisted pair cables that ANSI X3T9.5 subcommitte intends to
    endorse for TPDDI (Twisted Pair Distributed Data Interface) "

    Is DEC represented on these committies?

    How does this wire/classification relate to open DECconnect?

    How is our internal work on TPDDI going?

    Any and all info. will be welcome and appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Bruce Murphy

436.1Category 5 UTP for FDDILEVERS::B_CRONINFri Jan 10 1992 10:1312
    See 430.2 for details on the state of the committee. DEC is
    represented, we chair the committee, and also have someone in the room
    participating in the debates.

    Contact Jack Learson for info on the ATT cables. In general, our
    position has been that if someone wants to take the risk that UTP FDDI
    will work, then pulling category 5 UTP is the least risky way to play
    the future. There is no agreement yet that it will work to everyone's
    satisfaction.

    we are looking at the details of whether FDDI can work on UTP. No info
    is available yet to give you.
