434.0. "1550 nm??" by BLNOTE::RICHARDSON () Tue Dec 24 1991 13:52

We in Digital Services have a customer interested in a 1550 nm single mode
laser FDDI management module for use in the DECconcentrator 500. I have quite a
few questions in regard to this request, but I'll keep them to a minimum for
now.

First, has anyone ever dealt with this type of requirement?

Second, is there any technical reason why this is an unreasonable requirement?

Third, can 1550 nm and 1300 nm be used with the same fiber optic cable?

Fourth, are there any 3rd party vendors that may be able to assist in a
small development effort?

Fifth, what other questions do I need to be asking?

Thanks,
	Terry

Yes, this has come up before (once that I know of). The best way to do
it is with 1550 nm transceivers on the board. (External adapters might
be possible but those would have the same sort of drawbacks as external
multi-single converters; the result would not be as reliable or go as
    far.)

The previous time when this came up we ended up handling it via CSS, or
whatever they are called now. The same approach is worth using again.
    Talk to Wendy Michael (CGHUB::MICHAEL).

Custom FDDI DECconcentrator 1550 - Double the amount of data
transmitted over a single fiber link, at distances
up to 40KM (25 miles) depending on fiber characteristics.

Details: o Customers who presently lease a fiber link and use
the DECconcentrator 500 can DOUBLE the amount of
data transmitted over the link by adding Custom
	     DECconcentrator 1550s.

o Data intensive applications, medical imaging, petroleum
refining, and chemical companies who transmit large
files (usually greater than 7MB in size) are target
customers - they need high bandwidth and may already
have fiber, or are contemplating adding a fiber link.

o The Custom DECconcentrator is a modified version of
the standard product, with more powerful transmit/
receive lasers. Coupled with a third party Wave
Division Multiplexer (WDM), Digital has a solution
NOT AVAILABLE FROM ANY OTHER VENDOR!

o Functions the same as the DECconcentrator 500,
Single Mode Fiber Variant. Supports 4 device
	     ports.

Benefits: o Existing DECconcentrator Users: A cost savings -
DOUBLE the amount of data transmitted over a single
	     fiber link.

o Customers who need the 100Mb/s data transfer capacity,
but find leasing a fiber link cost prohibitive can now
transmit twice the amount of data over a single fiber
	     link.

o Although a Custom Design, the DECconcentrator 1550 operates
exactly as the Standard DECconcentrator - transparent to
	     the user, with consistent management.

Custom DECconcentrator - Details

The Standard DECconcentrator 500 transmits over a frequency of 1300 Nanometers.
The Custom DECconcentrator 1550 transmits over a frequency of 1550 Nanometers.
By adding a Wave Division Multiplexer to the configuration, both laser
frequencies can be multiplexed over one fiber link.
Because the frequencies are different, twice the amount of data can be
successfully transmitted over a fiber link:

____________ _____________
DECconcen- |_ _|DECconcen- |

trator 1550|_/ \_|trator 1550|
------------ -------------

The Standard DECconcentrator 500 has been modified by adding more
powerful 1550 laser transmit/receivers to the mother board.

COMPETITION
NO OTHER VENDOR can offer this solution! At the technical feasibility
stage, other vendors were hesitant because of the estimated
development costs. T&N was confident enough to share the risk with
our customer to solve their business need - and this customer has ordered
an additional 7 units!

SUSPECTS
Customers who lease a fiber link are the most likely suspects - cost of the
link is key. If the customer owns their fiber link, they most likely have
pulled multiple cables, so cost and bandwidth are not at issue.

In addition to the industry applications mentioned in the News Flash
applications that require multimedia data transmission, graphic transmissions,
and R&D applications, are prime suspects.

LIMITATIONS
The design of the Custom board in this product precludes a
configuration greater than 4 device ports (one expander card).
(The Standard product supports 8 device ports - or two
expander cards.)

AVAILABILITY and PRICING
The Custom DECconcentrator 1550 has a 10 week lead time.
The price will be approximately $80K to $90K for 2 concentrators, and
approximately $500 for the third party Wave Division Multiplexers
(WDM). The WDMs may be purchased directly from the vendor by the
customer, or may be included in the Custom Quotation.

The Custom DECconcentrator is significantly more expensive than the
Standard product. This is directly related to the cost of the
new 1550nM transmit/receive lasers. However costly, compared to the cost of
an additional leased fiber link, the payback is less than 12 months!
