433.0. "DECconc 500 - 6 Port Copper Module Problem" by MSDSWS::WEST () Thu Dec 19 1991 06:09

    I had ordered a DEFCN-TA (6 port copper module) and a DEFCN-NA (4 port
    fiber module) along with a DECconcentrator 500. When I placed both
    modules in the DECconcentrator, and then turned it on, the 6 port
    copper module failed diagnostics (red light on far left).

    I talked to the DEC field service people about the problem, and they
    indicated that the module itself was probably ok, and felt that the
    microcode revision was wrong in the DECconcentrator. An indication that
    this might be the case is that when the diagnositics are run on the
    board, only 4 of the 6 LED's light up.

    I had ordered and received the "Version 3.0" microcode, so I thought that
    I would have no problem downloading the DECconcentrator with it.

    In reading the microcode documentation, however, it seems that I need
    the Management Module for the DECconcentrator to be able to download
    the microcode. Is this correct?

    If so, are we going to tell a customer when they order the 6 port
    copper modules with the DECconcentrator that they also have to buy the
    Management Module, order the DECndu software and the V3 microcode, just so
    they can get the copper module to work. I hope the answer to this is
    not yes.

    My take on this is that the DECconcentrator should be shipped from the
    factory with microcode already loaded in it that supports all current
    modules.

    Thanks for any info on this.

433.1More Info on DECcon 500 - 6 Port Module ProblemMSDSWS::WESTThu Dec 19 1991 09:4612
    Thought I would add some additional info, to avoid the (possibly)
    obvious questions.

    I did try the board in all 3 slots in the DECconcentrator 500, and it
    failed diagnostics in all 3.

    In looking at the documentation that came with the Decconcentrator 500,
    there was a "sort-of" license pak, minus the license, which indicated
    that the microcode revision level was 2.3.

    It is. V3.0 began shipping inside DC500's in July 1991. The copper
    modules started shipping later in the summer.
433.3Maybe "3.0 preceded copper FRS" But,...MSDSWS::WESTFri Jan 03 1992 01:0824

    Maybe so, but the documentation I received indicated that 2.3 was
    loaded on the DC500, and the diagnostics seem to support this. Could
    it be that 1 DC500 "slipped though the cracks" with the old microcode?
    Not only that, but field service also thinks it has the wron microcode.

    Does anyone know who the current Copper Module product manager is? I
    tried sending a message to the name mentioned in a previous note, but
    they were no longer at the node given.

    As I see it now, I have 3 options:

      1. Ship the DC500 back for another one, hoping that I don't get 1
         more that "fell through the cracks".
      2. Ship the Copper Module back for another one, hoping that the new
         one will pass diagnostics.
      3. Order a Management Module (ROT/CON of course), download the new
         microcode, see if the copper module works, then ship the
         Management Module back.

    I will probably do #3.
