417.0. "VAXStation4000s & FDDI" by LARVAE::HARVEY (Baldly going into the unknown...) Thu Dec 12 1991 11:58

      From the very limited information I have about the new VAXstation 4000s,
      I understand they have a single Turbochannel slot available (running at
      50 MBps).

      Can anyone confirm their ability to support the DEFZA (Controller 700) in
      this slot ? ie. software drivers etc.

      I hear support is available in VMS 5.5 - is this true ?

      When is V5.5 "readily" available (shipping with 6000-600s now ?!).

      Are there any other gotchas that would prevent their use on FDDI ?

      Thanks in advance.

    Yes, there are going to be modified 4000-60s with a single slot
    turbochannel slot. The hardware is not available yet.

    The software for the Ethernet and FDDI controllers is being written
    now. The Ethernet is finished, the FDDI is almost finished. We (in
    VMS) are not able to provide the software until a more stable hardware
    base is ready for load testing. Since the hardware/software is not
    100% done and since V5.5 has already shipped, it is impossible for the
    turbochannel support to be in VMS V5.5. The support for this will be
    a release of VMS after V5.5. The exact release depends on the
    availability dates of the quality hardware; but at this time, the
    PLANNED PLANNED PLANNED (not PROMISED) release for support is V5.5-1.
    We are trying to support the PMAZ (SCSI controller), PMAD (Ethernet
    controller), and DEFZA (FDDI controller) in V5.5-1.
417.2No FDDI on 4000-60SHIPS::FROST_JMon Aug 17 1992 16:279
    In case anyone still reads this note - we have just been told that the
    4000 Model 60 will NOT support the FDDI interface in its turbochannel
    slot - only Ethernet, and SCSI currently (these apparently are prorammable
    i/f's and the FDDI i/f is DMA which is where the problems lie). If you
    need to run a VAXstation on FDDI you have to upgrade to a Model
    4000-90. Also you will need OpenVMS 5.5-2.

    .2 is correct. But I would like to add that the problem is not in the
    FDDI card. The problem is with the system/turbochannel bus card. The
    4000-60 will not support any Turbochannel option that does DMA.

Is an FCO being looked into? I'd hope so...

417.5Has fix - no funding !BONNET::LISSDANIELSTue Aug 18 1992 15:4213
Latest word from TURBO card prod mgmt (yesterday) was that engineering
has provided the fix. But has not a budget to implement it for existing
cusotmers... I cannot say if that is the FINAL truth...

Thus the need to upgrade to model 90.

Can someone tell a person far away from VMS system management
if 5.5-2 is current or future version ?

If future - when ?

    The word I got is that there will be no changes for existing systems
    and no changes for the ones in the future. DMA Turbochannel devices
    will never be supported on the 4000-60. Note that this includes
    possible Turbochannel to Token Ring cards that may be done. And this
    includes all VME options because the Turbochannel to VME adapter will
    not be supported.

    V5.5-2 is the release that's about to come out the doors. The plan
    today is that it leaves VMS for SSB on 25-Aug-1992.

    See note 3233.4 of CLUSTER notesfile - it says that Model 90 T/C-FDDI
    hasn't been officially qualified for V5.5-2. What's the latest? Did
    it make it in? When will the adapter be available?
