Yes , a DECbridge 600 can bridge 3 Ethernet segments to FDDI. Are you
proposing that the customer use a DECbridge 600 in this config ? How
do you plan to configure it ?

I wouldn't recommend installing the adapter without upgrading. The VMS
release that supports the DEMFA is available now, why not install it ?
>>Will 6000s boot OK with controller installed but not

Where are the 6000s booting from ? Is there also a CI connection ?
I believe VAX 6000s can't boot over FDDI or Ethernet.

| One thing to watch out for with this configuration is DECnet limitations.
DECnet does not allow more than one controller per node connected to the
same extended LAN. It does't matter whether the connnections are Ethernet,
FDDI, or some mix. This is because of the addresses that DECnet uses.
You can use multiple controllers without any problem so long as you take
care to have DECnet use only one. Other protocols can use all of the
controllers (assuming they handle that, as LAVC and LAT do now).

| Thanks for help in .1 and .2 -- I will inform customer.
The 6000s are CI based and boot from disk on HSC. The two DECbridge
600s will connect to Concentrator with each serving 3 Ethernets. The 3
6000s will connect to same Concentrator.
I have added another note from same customer regarding protocols
supported by FDDI. Please feel free to check the note further down in
Conference.
Thanks.

416.4 | Please note correct model numbers | QUIVER::POULIN | | Tue Dec 17 1991 11:13 | 20 |
|
Just a note to clarify model numbers.
The DECbridge 600 is three Ethernet Ports (NO FDDI).
The DECbridge 610 is three Ethernet Ports and one SAS FDDI Port.
The DECbridge 620 is three Ethernet Ports and one DAS FDDI Port.
There are updrade paths for these models.
There are also variations on the 610 and 620 models, depending on
ANSI versus Single Mode FDDI support in various combinations. Please
consult your configurations guide for more details.

| Do not install the DEMFA (DEC FDDI Controller 400) until you have
upgraded to the version of VMS (V5.4-3 or later) that supports it.
During field test, some of the sites tried this and got crash dumps
and useless systems until they pulled the DEMFAs. The problem was never
investigated, so I can't say what it was, or what versions are afected.
But to be safe, just don't do it.
