401.0. "VME FDDI/DAS sources?" by TOOHOT::ROCHA () Fri Nov 22 1991 16:19

    I need a FDDI/DAS (dual attached system) solution for a DECstation. My
    customer wants to have 4 DECstations dual attached in a FDDI ring.
    The only solution I can come up with might be a 3rd party VME based
    FDDI/DAS board.

    Does anyone know of any 3rd party VME FDDI/DAS borads that work with
    our VME I/O adapter for the turbo channel?

    Thanks

I'll ask the obvious question: what's the specific requirement that makes the
customer look for DAS? Depending on the answer, there may be other
solutions that may be acceptable.

401.2it's DAS only...TOOHOT::ROCHAMon Nov 25 1991 16:537
    .1 - This is an R&D group investigating FDDI/DAS and our SAS solution
     just doesn't cut it. This is a DCS (Distributed Control System)
     vendor that wants to understand the dual ring attributes of FDDI for
     plants that tend to blow up when out of control or the network drops
     off...

I'm still confused... It sounds like either:

1. the customer wants to play with DAS, to see what DAS is like, so obviously
   only DAS will do, or

2. the customer believes that for this application, attaching everything to
   the trunk dual ring with DAS is best.

If 1, then about all I can say is "sorry to see him waste the time". If 2,
then it would be worthwhile explaining why other approaches will result it
a MORE reliable and MORE fault-tolerant (i.e., more explosion-tolerant)
network. FWIW, I've helped design some FDDI configurations around
concentrators for applications such as refineries, where "what happens to my
network when some corner of the site goes up in flames" is a real issue.

    Your right about case 1.

    And I thing you're going to be right about case 2! If you're the right
    source and available to talk to the customer, then give me a call and
    let's see what we can do to bring them around...
