385.0. "bootp & DECfoo 500s" by MIPSBX::thomas (The Code Warrior) Mon Nov 04 1991 17:43

On the LKG LAN, I've notice that a significant amount of IP broadcast traffic
is due to the bootp requests of various DECconcentrators and DECbridges. Since
bootp PDUs are addressed to 255.255.255.255, all IP hosts must at least do a
UDP port lookup.

Why doesn't the FDDI f/w implement backoff timers for bootp as is done for
MOP? Most of the gear seems to reissue bootp requests every 75 seconds or so.

Of hosts issuing unanswered bootp requests, 10 are DEFEBs, 14 are DEFCNs,
11 are VT1000s, 1 is a DS3100, and 2 are DECservers.

Since 4am today of ~17000 bootp requests, 16500 are from DEFEBs or DEFCNs.

Just a guess, if you're running v3.x firmware in the boxes AND haven't given
them an IP address they'll continually request this address by trying a BOOTP
about every 1 minute - is this your problem? if so issue the devices with
IP addresses and they'll shut up.

    I understand that. But the retry interval is too small in any case.
385.3LEVERS::ANILTue Nov 05 1991 17:408
    The backoff algorithm and retry interval used in DEFEB and DEFCN
    are as per the bootp spec (rfc951) which calls for an eventual
    64 seconds (with random fudge) retry. Your comment is noted, however.

    The LKG devices should be assigned IP addresses soon.. your
    note has hopefully been forwarded to the network manager.

    Hi,

    What file is the Bridge actual going to ask for (or is it just going to
    try and get it's IP address from it) ?

    Is there anyway to configure a host to send the IP address that it is
    requesting ?

    See note 921.4. The bridge only looks for the IP address in the bootp
    reply. Some Unix systems insist that a load file be specified in the
    bootptab file, so create an empty file. I think that should work.

    Thanks for the info...
