384.0. "programming in FDDI?" by TPOVC::SAMCHU () Mon Nov 04 1991 01:17

Hi:
I have a customer who want to use FDDI in DECstation 5000/200 (
FDDI controller 700) to do the "video teleconference". He have some question
about how to programming in FDDI. Can he use TCP/IP programming subrountine
or Socket or steam ? If he don't want to use TCP/IP, do DEC support any
FDDI driver to help him to do the programming? (programming guide?)

Also can two workstation direct connect via FDDIcontroller or have to
connect via Concentrator(If just two workstaion need to connect)?

Can I get any doc from the Net? (like programming guide, users manual)

	Thank you for your help.

Regards,
Sam CHU

For the most part, FDDI looks just like an Ethernet. So you can use
    TCP, DECnet, or DLI.

And yes, if you want to connect just two stations, you don't need a
concentrator. You will need the concentrator as soon as you get your
third station.

    Thank you, paul and thomas.

I have one more qustion. If my customer don't want to use TCP/IP to do
the programming. He want to use our driver of FDDIcontroller to write
his own comm program. What kind of driver can we support? (Data link
layer?) Where can I find this kind of programming guide?

    Thank you again.

He can either use DLI or the packetfilter. Both are documented in the
    ULTRIX docset.
