357.0. "Cost Per Foot" by PEACHS::SCHULTZ (Peripheral Visionary...) Fri Oct 04 1991 12:21

I am in the process (Still) of trying to install an FDDI (Lab) network
here in the CSC/AT. I plan on having the main ring contained within the
central Lab of the building (Ring Length about 250 meters). From the 2
concentrators that comprise the ring, I then am treeing off to
Satellite Equipment Racks in the smaller labs of the building, each of
which will also have a Concentrator/Bridge. From the FDDI wiring guide
is is suggested that I run 6-8 Fiber cable from the ring to these SER's
to allow for future needs. What does this stuff roughly cost per foot
    to have installed ??

I need to know simply so I can be prepared for the justification of
this network. Is this going to cost $2000 or $20,000, or $50,000 to
    install ??

The local wiring will be done with prebuilt cables and installed in the
    FDDI wiring Boxes.

The cost for low-fiber-count cables should be in the $'s/foot range. It
varies depending on the cable construction, jacket materials, etc. Call
Siecor in Hickory, North Carolina for a vendor's up-to-the-minute
    estimate.

I'm writing a reply to my own note so that others may use it as
    reference in the future.

Got official prices from Anixter and they have an agreement with DEC to
supply F/O cable. I got prices on 6 and 12 fiber cables with a Plenum
fire code, PVC would obviously be cheaper. 12 fiber 62.5/125 Dual
Window Multimode is $2.63 - $2.76 per foot. AT&T and SIECOR were the
vendors with AT&T being cheaper. 6 fiber 62.5/125 Dual Window Multimode
is $1.77 - $1.89 per foot with SIECOR beating out AT&T on this one.
AT&T did not have a 24 fiber cable but SIECOR did. I didn't get these
prices as I don't need 24 fiber cable from IDF to HDF. I will assume
that since I need about $2500.00 worth of fiber, the labor to install
and test would be at least that much or more. I will write another node
if and when I finally get this stuff installed.
