Please do not use ALL CAPS, as it is considered shouting.

What exact errors is he generating when connecting the DEFCN to the
main ring. What other equipment is on the ring, and who makes it and
what is the topology of the ring.

It is obvious that the DEFCN and the DEFZA modules in the 5000 systems
are compatible as they are working. Quite a bit of the other vendors
equipment has issues when connecting to ours. Many don't comply with
the standard, or just interpreted the standard a little differant than
we (DEC) did. The current version of the DEFCN and DEFEB code is
available from the Customer Support Center. Version 3.0B is the current
version of code for the DEFCN (Concentrator), and this includes version
    6.2 of SMT.

Please get the exact messages and situation from the customer, also get
the other equipment (Makes and Models and Code Versions) on the ring
and post it here so that we can try to formulate a solution.

As far as I know, NDU is only available for VMS and not Ultrix.

| | Sorry about all the caps
Some of the devices on the ring are Network System routers and Proteon
model p4200. This network is campus wide. I will get more details later
    today.

| 351.3 | Might be inability to deal with void frames... | BAGELS::LEVY |  | Wed Sep 25 1991 15:48 | 18 |
| | re: .0

Since you say that the DEC gear works fine by itself, I'd suspect that
at least one of the third-party boxes does not deal with void frames
correctly. Void frames are used by Digital's Ring Purger to remove
no-owner frames from the ring. In future versions of the DECbridge &
DECconcentrator microcode, the Ring Purger will be a manageable
    attribute.

If void frames are indeed the problem, and if this is a critical
customer need, a special version of the current microcode can be provided
with the Ring Purger turned off. Use your normal escalation channels to
file a CLD in order to obtain this microcode.

    re: .1

DECndu is currently available in three flavors: VMS, RISC/ULTRIX, and
    VAX/ULTRIX.

| 351.4 | Network Systems new code. | STKHLM::TORGNY |  | Fri Sep 27 1991 04:28 | 16 |
| | Hi,
I've just been using DEFCN & DEFZA together with Network Systems
NSC 6848 bridge/router. We noticed that the NSC box eats 1KB buffers
and logged an error stating invalid frame class 255 type 1. However
NSC have fixed this in there new code, both for the router
    and bridge/router implementation.
You can monitor the buffer usage in the NCS box to see if this is
the problem. Access is via telnet or v24 port. Command syntax is
    fairly simple/friendly.
    Regards,
    	Torgny...
