342.0. "Does Novell need PID for translation?" by MSDOA::LOVE (Do it with DNA) Fri Sep 06 1991 13:32

I just received a question from a customer that is
considering buying DECbridges 518 and 618 to create a 28 km
fiber link between several remote Ethernets. They have
Novell 802.3 packets on their Ethernets and these Novell
packets do not conform to the 802.2LLC header formats. I
read in the "Bridge and Extended LAN Reference" page 2-11
that there is a a table in each bridge containing the PIDs of
special protocols, and that the AppleTalk PID is entered by
default. Does that mean one exists for Novell? If not, does
that mean my customer is incorrect and his Novell packets
will pass between the two Ethernets across the FDDI through
the two DECbridges with no problem? If none of the
above what is the procedure to get this potential problem
         fixed?

         Thanks,

         Norm

Novell "raw 802.3" packets will pass through two DECbridges
via an FDDI, no special procedure required.

As .1 says, the Novell packets will pass; your customer should be
aware, however, that he cannot later add fiters to *prevent* the Novell
packets from being passed, since they don't adhere to 802.2 SSAP/DSAP
format, nor Ethernet V2 format. Just a FYI... Novell defines LAN as
"PC's running Novell", they tend to disregard the rest of the world...
    :-)

It would be a good idea, considering the problems with "raw 802.3",
to use IPX equipment in Ethernet format (I believe a switch is
supplied with IPX nodes allowing operation in either Ethernet or
    raw 802.3 format).

Since there is no real standard on how to send packets on the FDDI
translated from "raw 802.3" specified by Novell, different vendors
may not work together. For instance, 2 DEC bridges, as I mentioned
earlier, will work fine, however add a cisco router on the FDDI
which routes IPX and you will have trouble. Putting Novell stations
in Ethernet mode will get rid of all such problems.
