How can we connect two locations with existing SM fiber at an
Ethernet/802.3 level?
Client:
SMF 10/125um (extra strands from PBX) 3KM link
DEC:
.not enough budget for DEBET, DEBAM-RC. Launch loss, 850nm source.
.?maybe? DEBAM-RF. Can 1300nm source/power over come losses?
.FDDI-to-FDDI bridge? Can it be done with 10/100 bridges?
If someone in engineering can confirm yes or no on the DEBAM-RF it
would be very important to the re-direction of the sale to FDDI.
However, at the present time the client wants no part of the FDDI
expense to get Ethernet connectivity.
Has anyone had success with SMF Ethernet?
I know this is an FDDI file, but I need the expertise in total for
fiber. If the answer is NO for any type of SMF Ethernet, then I have to
work with sales to sell FDDI or get nothing. Today, the client really
does not have a need for 100MBPS.
Thanks for the help and suggestions.

One possible solution:
One of my customers is using ODS 378 Multi-mode to Single-mode fiber
converters to link 2 DEBAM-Rx's over SMF.
"The ODS 378 is a fiber-optic converter which transforms 820 nm optical
signals from 50/125, 62.5/125, 100/140 um duplex fiber cable into 1300
nm signals, and vica versa. A single mode 8/125 um duplex fiber cable
can link 2 ODS 378's together at distances up to 52 kilometers."

'Course, if there's an all-DEC solution available, that's
preferable. But this is *one* option.....
