I've spoken to a customer that has a DECbridge 500 in a network with 2 FDDI Cisco routers, 2 Sun file servers, and 2 DECstation 5000s. The customer claims he's experiencing problems with loosing IP packets, and with DECnet/Ultrix routing. The customer claims that his symptoms don't exist with the DECbridge 500s out of the network. The customer has spoken to Sun about his IP problems, and Sun states that we need to find out what version of SMT is being run on the DECbridge 500s so it can be compared to the SMT version of the Sun FDDI controllers. The customer dosen't have ELMS, so I don't know what version of microcode the DECbridge 500s are running, but I looked at the SMT version of a couple of DECbridge 500s that we are using. The SMT version is a "1", and the version of microcode is V3.0.1. What does a "1" for the SMT version represent? The SMT version should be something like 5.1 Dave

328.1 | It is SMT frame's version ID, not Document Rev. | EWBV06::IDO | Thu Aug 22 1991 05:36 | 12
V5.1 or V6.2 are the revision number for ANSI draft SMT document. So, I think this document number dosn't exsist in any SMT frames. A value "1" you are seeing specifies the SMT Frame's version which identifies the structure of SMT frame header and information field. I recall this number was "00 00" in SMT Document Rev 5.1., but now it is "00 01" in V6.2. For more detail information, please see at part of SMT header in ANSI SMT document. Regards, Naoki

Sun is confused. SMT version mismatches might possibly cause some problems, but frame loss of user data frames is NOT one of them! Please get more details on the symptoms, and let it be known that the folks at Sun are way off base. paul |
