317.0. "Concentrator, manage?, bridge 610" by AUNTB::DAVISST () Wed Jul 31 1991 18:30

Customer on short schedule (govt. budget) has asked the following to
make sure they order the correct h/w.

    1. To be manageable by DECmcc, does a DECconcentrator have to have the
management card (A and B ports)? Can it have 3 4 port cards (SAS) and
    still be managed by DECmcc?

    2. Ehternet LANs have LAN Traffic Monitor for dedicating a bridge to
monitor Ethernet traffic. How can a customer monitor FDDI traffic?

    3. The chart on 3-16 in new N/W Buyers Guide is confusing. What is
    DEFCN-FA (left-hand column)? DEFCN-CA, etc.

    Customer plans to order following:
       DEFCN-AA
       3 DEFCN-NA (unless not manageable)
1 DEFCN-MA (if required to be managable)

Desire is to ahve FDDI in a box -- using 12 ports to run to bridges
    and XMI adapters.

They plan to order the follwoing bridge to serve 3 Ethernets from a
single fiber run to the Concentrator:

      DEFEB-TA (DECbridge 610, SAS, multimode)

Hope there is enough info for someone to help with a sanity check.
These products are new and the customer is under heavy rush. I will
continue to research in the morning, but all help here will be
    appreciated.

    Thanks.

To be managed (by ANY protocol) the concentrator has to be able to receive
and send messages. The hardware to do that lives on the A/B card. So if you
don't have one, the concentrator cannot be managed.

This means you need the A/B card to meet the requirement. If that makes
you short on ports, the alternatives are either an additional concentrator
(the most flexible solution) or perhaps the use of -620 (DAS) rather than
-610 bridges. I'd recommend the additional concentrator, but either approach
will work.
