The Northeast Government Accounts Group (NGAG) is currently having a bit of
difficulty competing with Synernetics' LANplex 5004 modular hub in an FDDI/
Ethernet extended LAN configuration. Digital's hardware totaled $360K, at 21%
discount for the configuration. Synernetics' hardware solution was quoted at
$185K. This is almost 1/2 of Digital's quote!
I am checking further into the proposed configuration to see if we are comparing
equivalent solutions. I also have a technical question that I would like to
have some assistance with. I believe that the following is a representation
of part of the network configuration. Doesn't this break the "2 repeater"
Ethernet rule?
+-------------------+
| LANplex 5004 |
A |-------------------| B
----| FDDI Enterprise |---- punch-
----| Access Module |---- down
|-------------------| +----+
| Ethernet Express |----------| |------REPEATER------ ThinWire drops
| Module (10BASE-T |----------| |------REPEATER------ ThinWire drops
| Repeater) |----------| |------REPEATER------ ThinWire drops
|-------------------| +----+
| Spare slot |
|-------------------|
| Spare slot |
+-------------------+
Aren't there 3 repeaters between the ThinWire stations on different 10BASE-T
ports? This configuration is also shown in Synernetics' marketing literarure.

The Ethernet conference is a better place for the repeater question. On the cost comparison: could you show what the configuration looks like? I assume the piece you drew was just a small part, since that clearly doesn't come anywhere near $100k. paul | |||||
