Hello,
I need to write testing specifications and test methods (name the test)
for the installation of a UTP and STP cable plant. This spec. will
be used in a customer tender to tender various subs. to do the work.
DEC is being paid as a consultant.
Can someone please help me or inform me where I can get this
information. What I envision needing is for example:
* Pairs Loop resistance
* Line Mapping
* Length of Each Cable
* db loss of each cable
* Impedance of each cable
* Noise tests of some sort
I need to understand more on these tests what they accomplish and what
I am missing to ensure that the installed Level 3 or 4 cable will meet
10 baseT specs.
In the IBM type 1 stp area I do not know what type of tests should be
run at all.
Thanks in advance,
Jim Durnin

What are your functional requirements?
- 10BaseT, Token Ring, Cable Plant, etc.
The standards work on Building Wiring, EIA/TIA 568 and CSA T529, has
generic requirements for the cable plant. The Digital purchase specs for
cable and various industry cable performance level programs have
specifications for the wire. The 10BaseT specification has end to end
requirements.
I am not aware of a single place where test specs and methods are
defined. I may be able to provide additional pointers either here or
via mail.

Terry (DEC Rep on CSA T529 Building Wiring Standard for Commercial
Buildings)

The Functional requirements are for 10BaseT for the UTP wiring and the
STP Ibm type 1 wire will be used in the near future for copper based
FDDI (CDDI). I don't know if it is possible to test for CDDI
capability, so I would be happy to meet 16 MB Token Ring specs.
It is one thing to quote the specs but the other side will be to
identify which tests should be run, what type of tester should be used and
what type of cable test documentation should be gathered to indicate whether
the installed cable plant meets the specs and will perform properly.
I do need assistance in relating the specifications to the actual
tests. Your assistance is appreciated.
Thanks, Jim Durnin NWSS
