Anyone care to comment on FDDI performance on a DECstation 5000/200 versus a 5000/100? I have a customer who is concerned about the fact that the turbochannel on the 100 is slower than the 200. Should he worry about it? He's thinking he will make heavy use of FDDI and does not want to get bitten. Thanks! -Ed

I have no direct experience with FDDI over the 5000/100 (I have used FDDI over the /200 for some time). However, the /200 Turbochannel is rated at around 93 Mbytes/sec, I believe (say 750 mbits/sec). The r3000 can maybe get 36 mbits/sec through a DEFZA while doing a little bit of protocol processing (udp/ip without checksums). Even if the /100 bus is half the speed of the /200, I think you have a bit of headroom. But a benchmark is the best proof, of course.. RIch |
