292.0. "Bridge 6xx Management" by COMICS::WOODWARD (Smile!) Mon Jul 01 1991 10:03

Hi all,

I'm a bit confused about why the new bridge 6xx series *requires* MCC elm.

Simplistic view; I put the 6xx into a ring and use ELMS to talk through a
bridge 500, asking for a ring map, or station info (SIF) or.... The bridge 500
takes the ELMS request and uses SMT to talk to the other stations on the ring.
The bridge 6xx uses (I assume) SMT 6.2, same as my 500, so I'd expect them to
talk happily on the ring to each other, so why can't ELMS get this info back
and use it ?

My first guess is that fuctions like elms map use the SMT extended service
frames and that the 6xx has a 'new' set of parameters with which to confuse
ELMS (am I close?), but there must be some functionallity that is 'basic' SMT
and which ELMS could use on the 6xx.

This would almost be treating the 6xx like any other 3rd party product, and we
can get minimal information with them in the ring (eg a ring map).

Any details on what does and what doesn't work (and why) appreciated
(or someone want to give me a 6xx I can try it on ;-)

292.16xx's have 3 or 4 ports to manageBAGELS::LEVYMon Jul 01 1991 18:143
    DECelms doesn't have the syntax (or data structures) to support
    multiport filtering. It was decided not to add them, because DECmcc is
    the strategic network management platform.
292.2No extensions to SMTQUIVER::CIARFELLAWhen in doubt, mumble.Tue Jul 02 1991 10:2218

    The DECelms ring map utility does not use SMT extended service frames;
    it uses the standard Station Information (SIF) Configuration and
    Operation frames. This is an important point: the ring mapping
    function does not make any extensions to the SMT protocols. It uses only
    what's available in the SMT draft standard, version 6.2.

    So, you can still use DECelms to build ring maps and gather SMT related
    information with the DECbridge 600 series. But (re. -1) Jon is right.
    The reason DECelms is not fully compatible with the DECbridge 600 series
    is due to the new multiport filtering extensions. DECmcc ELM fully
    supports the multiport extensions.

    DECelms can still be used to manage lines 1 and 2, but I'm
    not sure what would happen if you try to manage lines 3 and 4, or if
    you tried to manage the A and B PHY ports.

292.3Support of DECbridge 52X by DECelmsBEAGLE::ERIKFri Aug 30 1991 10:274
    Does DECELMS support DECbridge 52X ? (DECbridge 500 with Dual
    Attachment Station - DAS) If not what will not work - management
    of FDDI port B? Would it be possible to modify DECelms for the
    customers who don't have or don't want DECMCC?
