285.0. "VAX 9000 & FDDI" by DENVER::MALKOSKI () Thu Jun 13 1991 16:32

Can anyone tell me what the current schedule for FDDI on the VAX 9000
(either VMS or, preferably ULTRIX) is? We have an opportunity here in
Denver to sell a few of these and if I had a choice I'd rather not use
NSC Hyperchannel interconnects. Any info would be welcomed.

The DEC FDDIcontroller 400 FDDI to XMI communications adapter (DEMFA) was
product announced recently. See the May 28, 1991 Sales Update for info.
Availablity is listed as late Q1/FY92. Product manager is George Nielsen

REMEMBER, FDDI on VAX only supports DECnet and LAT at this time.

... due to an unresolved bug in the adapter. When the bug is resolved,
testing will begin to determine support for clusters.

Of course we are all talking about the DEMFA. This device
is the only device (not yet) available that attaches a VAX
directly to the FDDI. At present, only VMS supports this device.
Ultrix does not. VMS has put in support for FDDI in general,
including clusters. However, official support for the DEMFA
will not be a reality until all the known problems are solved.

PS I will be putting a copy of the VMS release notes with respect to
FDDI in here when they are "official". Also, the new multi-rail
or multi-adapter support for clusters will be available soon.
This will create new configuration possibilities for LAVc's, as
well as improving availability and performance.

     Thanks for any help.
