257.0. "DC500/DB500 and SNMP" by ZPOVC::RAMARAJ () Tue May 14 1991 09:07

When will our concentrator and bridges be SNMP manageable? Is there
any field test software available now for this?

Will SNMP management of these devices be able to achieve everything
that DECelms do now? If not, what are the management functionalities
    which may not be possible.

Other vendors, like Timeplex claim their concentrators are SNMP
    manageable.

Can all variables in the FDDI devices, SMT and MAC, be SNMP manageable?

Raj,

We just ended field test on an SNMP agent for the fddi bridge and
concentrator which supports 'gets'. 'Set' support will be available
in Q2FY92.

Well, almost all objects supported by ELMS will be supported by SNMP.
There are additional objects which are supported by SNMP but not by ELMS.
I say 'almost' because there are some objects made available by ELMs in which
it doesn't make sense to make available via SNMP - because the SNMP Network
Management Station wouldn't know how to use them.

For example, ELMS provides some high level functions like ring mapping.
Our SNMP agent is just providing the raw data. SNMP Network Management
Stations will have to provide the application which reads, munges, and
displays the data. There is no standard (or proposed standard, or draft
standard) in any SNMP mib which provides this functionality.

Management functionalities which are not provided for by objects in the
SNMP mibs may not be possible.

We'll soon be able to claim this.

All of the these variables supported by ELMS will be SNMP manageable. We also
support the draft IETF fddi mib. (By the way, the bridge also supports
the draft IETF bridge mib.)

257.2Will the snmp manageable bridge have an IP addressPRESS1::STUARTScott Stuart - MARVA Network Sales Support DTN 341-3132 - MARVA DistrictMon Jun 03 1991 19:018
When the DECbridge(s) get an SNMP agent, does that mean that they must have an
IP address?

If yes, how does that address get set, and can it use reverse ARP to get it
from a central server like the management station?

Yes, an IP address needs to be assigned, in either one of 2 ways:
    a) bootp
    b) ELMS

Three ways ... the IP address can also be set using the DECmcc
Extended LAN Management (DECmcc ELMS) Concentrator and Bridge
    	Access Modules.

DECmcc ELMS is the follow-on product to DECelms V1.1 (b above).
It provides DECelms functionality in a DECmcc environment and
    	is intended to replace DECelms.

Look at the SNMP config guide's troubleshooting section. Also, verify
that any port not in use is not left open (has a loopback connector).

Can you provide a pointer to the SNMP
config guide ? If its not available on
the net, how about the full title and
part number ?

Thanks,
