Problem @CERN with DS5000-200 + DEFZA (FRS)
-------------------------------------------
Observed on the DS5000-200 at CERN (one faulty, one works)
====================================================================
-. How is it possible to know the firmware revs of the DEFZA ?
Of course there is no NDU on the system...
-. At the boot time there is a msg about the FZA0 interface with
.... PMC rev65 PHYrev 540028465 FW1110453809
--------------------------------------------------------------------
On the field test system we were running V1.0B and we had made an
upgrade of the interface to V1.1.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
in both of the two systems I have loaded the NDU FT1.1
(ultrix v4.1(rev52))
(uws v4.1 (rev197))
the ndu -V is ok, but if I ask for the information of the interface
(ndu -s -c fza0 08-00-2b...)
I have the reply : Kernel No such device ...
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Rem: on test system the DS5000 were running ULTRIX T4.1A-0 (Rev.54)
UWS V.4.1 (Rev.197)

From DEC US :...
Subj: How to tell what firmware revision is for DEFZA...
The command netstat -I fza0 -s will return counters and status from
the adapter including the firmware revision.
I would be careful declaring Ultrix 4.1 will support the defza. The
truth is Ultrix 4.1 with the FDDI MUP, Ultrix 4.1a or Ultrix 4.2
support the defza. Not all Ultrix 4.1 version support the adapter.

Customer support questions
--------------------------
I suppose that the customer received the DEFZAs under ESP ???
- Does the customer have the phone number to get help from MKO
as mentionned in the notesfile FDDI on MOUSE ?
- Is ULTRIX V4.1-052 enough to run DEFZA properly ? <I think NO>
How come can a customer receive a DS5000-200 with Ultrix V4.1
with DEFZA without the MUP for FDDI ?
- Can a customer have DEFZA without NDU to load new versions ?
- As NDU is a licensed product is it automatically delivered or
should it be specially ordered or recommended for customer ?
(Customer bought the license and has NDU FT1.1 for Ultrix)
- Can we read the firmware revs with NDU or from console device
on those 2 DEFZAs as we can from other systems running T4.1A-054
in order to load a new firmware version ?
- What is the latest firmware version running on DEFZA ?
- Where can I get FDDI MUP kit for that customer ?
- Files can be transferred from node but not from the other ?
(I suppose 1 interface is bad. Customer doesn't want to swap the
the working interface with the non-working one.)
- What is the logistic part number for a DEFZA replacement ?
Any answer to any point will be warmingly welcomed

Walter, I try an answer the questions as best I can. Problem @CERN with DS5000-200 + DEFZA (FRS) ------------------------------------------- Observed on the DS5000-200 at CERN (one faulty, one works) ==================================================================== -. How is it possible to know the firmware revs of the DEFZA ? Of course there is no NDU on the system... netstat -I fza0 -s That is if you have the correct Ultrix OS. -. At the boot time there is a msg about the FZA0 interface with .... PMC rev65 PHYrev 540028465 FW1110453809 It's old Ultrix. Looks like 4.1 with the FDDI MUP. -------------------------------------------------------------------- On the field test system we were running V1.0B and we had made an upgrade of the interface to V1.1. -------------------------------------------------------------------- in both of the two systems I have loaded the NDU FT1.1 (ultrix v4.1(rev52)) (uws v4.1 (rev197)) the ndu -V is ok, but if I ask for the information of the interface (ndu -s -c fza0 08-00-2b...) I have the reply : Kernel No such device ... Again, this looks like you have the wrong Ultrix OS. NDU FT1.1 is not compatible with Ultrix 4.1. You need Ultrix 4.1a or Ultrix 4.2. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Rem: on test system the DS5000 were running ULTRIX T4.1A-0 (Rev.54) UWS V.4.1 (Rev.197) Customer support questions -------------------------- I suppose that the customer received the DEFZAs under ESP ??? - Does the customer have the phone number to get help from MKO as mentionned in the notesfile FDDI on MOUSE ? I have no idea about this. try contacting the product manager of DEFZA. delni::parikh - Is ULTRIX V4.1-052 enough to run DEFZA properly ? <I think NO> How come can a customer receive a DS5000-200 with Ultrix V4.1 with DEFZA without the MUP for FDDI ? A customer will NEVER receive a defza without 4.1a. 4.1 and the MUP was field test only. - Can a customer have DEFZA without NDU to load new versions ? Yes, in fact until V1.1 comes out of SSB there is no need for NDU. - As NDU is a licensed product is it automatically delivered or should it be specially ordered or recommended for customer ? (Customer bought the license and has NDU FT1.1 for Ultrix) I'm not certain of the logistics but I think the customer buys the upgrade for a nominal price. - Can we read the firmware revs with NDU or from console device on those 2 DEFZAs as we can from other systems running T4.1A-054 in order to load a new firmware version ? I can give you a way of decifering the garbage which is displayed when you run a system with old Ultrix. - What is the latest firmware version running on DEFZA ? V1.0 is currently shipping in the ESP. - Where can I get FDDI MUP kit for that customer ? You can't. It was a field test version. Buy defza on the ESP and you'lkl be able to get 4.1a. I think. - Files can be transferred from node but not from the other ? I don't understand your question. (I suppose 1 interface is bad. Customer doesn't want to swap the the working interface with the non-working one.) - What is the logistic part number for a DEFZA replacement ? I don't know part numbers, contact the product manager. Everything you have told me so far points to an old Ultrix OS not bad defza's. Regards, Phil | |||||
