240.1 | AMD chip set p/n | PRSFSA::SORIEUL | UNITED TO A BETTER digital | Thu Jul 04 1991 05:12 | 13 |
| AMD has developed a componant family for FDDI named SUPERNET.
The first release has 5 componants:
AM79C81A RAM Buffer Controller (RBC)
Am79C82A Data Path Controller (DPC)
Am79C83 Fiber Optic Media Access Controller (FORMAC)
Am7984A ENcoder DECoder (ENDEC)
Am7985A ENDEC Data Separator
But a new chip set must have 4 componants this year.
Regards
Jack

240.2 | FDDI chip set designs. | CGOS01::DMARLOWE | PDP 11: MOV -(PC),-(PC) | Wed Aug 26 1992 02:38 | 10 |
| I haven't really paid too much attention to chip sets. The only
thing I remember was the AMD first design and it not compliant with
FDDI today.
Who have we licenced to manufacture our chip set design?
How many other FDDI vendors are using that design?
Are there other manufacturers that have rolled their own and how
are those designs working?

| Some answers...
Motorola manufactures our chip set design and sells it.
National Semiconductor has their own FDDI chip set.

240.4 | AMD took out a license too | BONNET::LISSDANIELS | | Thu Aug 27 1992 06:53 | 6 |
| We are still saying that AMD licensed our set too,
and I think they are second sourcing for us,
if not marketing a chipset based on our design...
We have not licensed the part of the chipset that
provides DMA to ur buses... just the FDDI side of it.

240.5 | AMD does sell our PHY | KONING::KONING | Paul Koning, A-13683 | Mon Aug 31 1992 18:50 | 4 |
| The AMD Supernet-2 PHY chip is our design, but they carried over their own
MAC chip design into the second generation.

| Paul,
I've heard that AMD's FORMAC+ is using our licence to handle Void frame
correctly but they changed to use the licence on MAC chip?
