I'm helping a Texas State agency develop RFP specs for some FDDI/Ethernet equipment. They are hesitant to put "translating bridging" as a requirement for two reasons: 1) they fear no one else but DEC offers FDDI/Ethernet translating bridging and they are required by law to write specs that can be responded to by more than one vendor (I know, ugh). Is anyone aware of another FDDI/Ethernet bridge vendor who claims "translating bridging"? (NOTE: a few notes prior I see that cicso may be planning translation bridging by June'91. I'm going to have my customer ask cicso but would still like to know of any others claiming tranlation ... Fibermux, Fibercomm?, etc? 2) they have heard of the problem with "AppleTalk thru translating bridges problem". Even though I gave him DEC's position and fix for this (ie; summer availability) they are afraid only DEC has the fix. Ugh, I think the local "cisco" rep is spreading FUD. Any suggestions? Dave, I can help a bit with #1. Actually, quite a few vendors have "seen the light" and are either currently producing or have announced they will have a translating bridge. Fibronics was showing theirs at ComNet (although its not available to customers yet), Fibermux, does translation, cisco has announced but aren't shipping yet, AT&T, Cabletron has announced an upgrade to translation (not shipping yet), Raycom Systems and Ungermann-Bass. So I don't think your customer has to worry about this being a single-vendor-biddable RFP. Debbie | |||||
227.2 | 802.5 & 802.3 & FDDI ??? | GLDOA::MORRISON | Dave | Sun May 26 1991 00:18 | 6 |
So, when are we going to offer 4 /16 802.5 token ring to FDDI translating bridge - even a config with ethernet and 802.5 and FDDI all in the same box?? It will sure help compete with Fibermux, etc. I have the ability to propose such if needed but I'd MUCH rather propose our own product. |
