224.0. "price for SMF?" by VAXRIO::ROLF () Mon Mar 11 1991 11:04

    With the event of SMF for FDDI the obvious question came up:

    How does SM fiber compare to MM fiber pricewise?

    We don't have SMF available yet in Brazil, hence the question for
    the audience. Does anyone have a rough idea?

    Thank you

224.10.25$/metre for SMFPOLAR::HOFFEMon Mar 11 1991 13:2212
    Rolf,
    Singlemode fiber itself is not too expensive and is very comparable to
    multimode in price(may even be cheaper due to much larger volumes
    produced for telecommunications needs).We pay ~$0.25/metre for SMF here
    in Canada.The big cost is installation of course.

    Singlemode connector costs are higher,by about a factor of two(MM ST
    costs ~$10.00 US,SM ST would be ~$20-$25 US) due to tighter tolerancing
    required.

    Hope this helps.

There's also likely to be a price difference in the endpoints
(concentrator, adapter, etc.). I don't know what this would
amount to in the typical case.

    Thanks for the inputs.

    In our case we need to connect two CONC500's over a distance of 3 Km,
    and yes, I know about the higher cost of optics involved.
