With the event of SMF for FDDI the obvious question came up:
How does SM fiber compare to MM fiber pricewise?
We don't have SMF available yet in Brazil, hence the question for
the audience. Does anyone have a rough idea?
Thank you

Rolf,
Singlemode fiber itself is not too expensive and is very comparable to
multimode in price(may even be cheaper due to much larger volumes
produced for telecommunications needs). We pay ~$0.25/metre for SMF here
in Canada. The big cost is installation of course.
Singlemode connector costs are higher,by about a factor of two(MM ST
costs ~$10.00 US,SM ST would be ~$20-$25 US) due to tighter tolerancing
required.
Hope this helps.

There's also likely to be a price difference in the endpoints (concentrator, adapter, etc.). I don't know what this would amount to in the typical case. paul | |||||

Thanks for the inputs.
In our case we need to connect two CONC500's over a distance of 3 Km,
and yes, I know about the higher cost of optics involved.
