I have heard that our FDDI controller 700 uses "Flash" memory which enables the future downline-loading of SMT code updates. Three questions: 1) What is Flash memory and why would it be important to my customer? 2) Is it used in the DECconcentrator and DECbridge today? 3) Is it planned to be used in the XMI board? Thx, Stan

Flash memory is used in place of ROM. It is programmable which allows software upgrades, whether bug fixes or changes to the standards, without the typical board/ROM replacement by customer service. Yes is used on both the concentrator and the bridge. Yes is will be used in the XMI board. NDU is the tool which is used to upgrade a system. It runs on VMS and Ultrix. Regards, Phil
213.2 | XMI board uses EEPROM and not Flash ROM | TALLIS::REGE | Wed Feb 27 1991 13:40 | 8
Strictly speaking XMI board is using EEPROM and not Flash ROM. The functionality for a customer doesn't change. If microcode on the board needs to be changed, then it can be done at the customer site, either locally or over the network. |
