174.0. "AppleTalk, FDDI at CERN" by BERN01::DEY (Walter Dey, EIS, Berne Switzerland) Wed Nov 14 1990 04:07
Quote from the CERN Computer Newsletter July - October 1990, No. 200
MacIntosh Networking
.....
Recently, Apple has announced and implemented a revised version of its
networking protocols. With this revision there can be many more nodes
directly on Ethernet. This is called AppleTalk Phase II, and comes as the
default for new Mac systems which have a direct Ethernet connection.
Unfortunatly, part of the Apple specifiaction ot the new protocols
clashes with the specification of the new DEC FDDI bridges which are now
used to interconnect the different Ethernets across the CERN site. This
unfortunately means that until Apple and DEC agree on how to fix this
(worldwide) problem we can NOT run AppleTalk Phase II on the CERN site.
......
Questions
1) What is this clash (I have read #79). I don't understand why we have
to hide this information (truth). As you see, this information is spreading
over HEPnet with Gb/sec speed ! CERN, what's that ? never heard ...
2) What are we doing as a solution to that problem ?
Regards
Walter.
