168.0. "DS5500 on FDDI ??" by GUEMUS::SHELTONPA () Wed Nov 07 1990 13:02

	Does anyone know of plans to provide an FDDI connection to the
DECsystem 5500. If this is not public information a pointer to the proper
individual would be appreciated.

168.1DEFZA will do itQUIVER::WEEKSThu Nov 08 1990 11:095
	My understaning is that this machine is a TurboChannel based workstation
	and as such will have FDDI support from the DEFZA adapter currently
	in field test.

168.25500 has NO TurboChannelGUEMUS::SHELTONPAThu Nov 08 1990 11:479
    The DS5500 is in the BA430 (same form factor as the BA213). It is
    slated for a VME adapter like the DS5000 with the TurboChannel however,
    those doing the VME/TurboChannel adapter say the DS5500 has no
    TurboChanneland there is a different adapter. I am trying to find
    out if there is also a parallel effort for FDDI.

    Thanks,

168.35500 has a (god forbid) QbusZPOVC::HWCHOYBRAINFRAG, brain-case badly fragmentedFri Nov 09 1990 01:513
    the DS5500 has a Qbus with an VMEbus adaptor. I don't think anyone will
    want to spend effort putting FDDI on a Qbus. And throughput from a
    VMSbus FDDI board will be limited by the Qbus too. Can anyone confirm?
168.4FDDI on 5500GUEMUS::SHELTONPAWed Nov 14 1990 00:498
    The 5500 has a special, non Qbus, port which will be used for the
    VME adapter. I was thought someone might build a FDDI adapter for
    the same port. I have since found it is on the wish list but not
    funded.

    If one were to make an FDDI/Qbus adapter it would only use a maximum
    of 1/3 the Qbus bandwidth. That would not be too bad since no disk
    of Enet is on the 5500 Qbus.

The DS5500 has something new called the RIO bus. I would contact the product
manager Tim (PSDVAX::) Resker for more information.
168.6Is it here yet?CHEFS::CARTERRRichard Carter.Tue Oct 22 1991 11:346
    Is there any current news on the plans for/availablity of connections
    between a DECsystem 5500 and FDDI networks?

    Thanks in advance.

168.73rd party FDDI on DS5500?THEWAV::KRUEGERULTRIX/UNIX SpecialistWed Jan 08 1992 14:255

    Is there anyone out there that can answer this? Is there any 3rd party
    options for FDDI for the DS5500?
