    Question:

I'm having a problem when I run etherfind from the Sun
on our FDDI network. It causes the concentrator to go
south and it ends up resetting itself, sometimes
continuously. If I run etherfind from the Sun seperated
completely from the concentrator everything seems to
work reasonably well. In other words if the Sun is
connected directly on the concentrator, bad things
    		happen.

    Anybody

| For those who aren't familiar with it, could you explain what "etherfind" does? paul | |||||

| Etherfind is like a HP-LAN Analyzer it monitors raw packets or
it can filter packets as well.

| Now I'm REALLY confused. If it MONITORS, how can it affect any other node on the net? It sounds like it also sends things. In principle, nothing any station can send should take down a concentrator, but there may be cases that slipped through the cracks. paul | |||||

When etherfind monitors the network, does it monitor the whole network,
ie., promiscuously receive all frames on the ring or do you program
it to listen to specific addresses?

Does etherfind transmit anything, ie., flood the network with arp
    requests or anything like that?

The location of the etherfind node on the ring should be transparent to
the concentrator. It should not make any difference whether the two
boxes are directly connected or not. I assume that the etherfind is
running on a Sun workstation and that the problem occurs when you
connect the B port of the Sun to one of the M ports on the con,
    correct?

How long does it take for the concentrator to become disabled after
you connect the Sun box to it?

| Keep in mind a concentrator can have a network management module. Is it possible that the software is sending management commands? (I wouldn't think so if it is a program that monitors the net) Megan | |||||
