125.0. "FDDI and imaging" by WSE014::JENSEN (Paul Jensen) Tue Aug 28 1990 19:28

Although I am not a support person (I am one of the DS5000
X Server developers) I am in a position where I need to answer
some FDDI questions for a customer (University which would
like to use DS5000's for imaging). I have spent an hour
browsing this conference, and haven't been able to find the
information I need. Therefore I apologize in advance if
these are obvious/stupid questions: as in all customer
situations, goodwill is inversely related to response time,
and I haven't had any luck finding this information elsewhere:

    (1) which version of ULTRIX will support FDDI (on DS 5000)?

    (2) what is the software interface? Presumably TCP/IP,
but are there any lower interfaces?

    (3) The customer wants to connect two DS5000s (~2km apart).
Do they need any hardware other than the FDDI adaptor
    	boards for the respective machines?

    (4) Do they need two pairs of fiber to connect the DS 5000s
        or only one?

    (5) Can they use single-mode fiber?

    (6) What is the maximum transfer rate between two DS 5000s?
What programming interface can achive this rate?
(they want to blast images from one DS 5000 to the other
    	for display)

    Thanks in advance,

    					/Paul Jensen

P.S. Is there any FDDI documentation which exists *on-line*
in *postscript* format? I'd like to learn more about
this technology, but I can't justify dinging my cost
center for the various documents/videos mentioned elsewhere
         in this conference.

    Hi,

To start with there is an FDDI - System Leevel Description available.

    See note 44.5

I can answer a couple of these questions...

(3) As I mentioned in an earlier note, for two nodes on the ring, it suffices
to have just the two adapters. Any more than two, you need a concentrator.

(4) One fiber pair.

(5) No. That would require different transceivers in the adapter.

For the other questions you need to talk to the Ultrix people.

    Hallo,

for the Ultrix support see the note "SLIP for FDDIcontroller" I think
they don't want to support FDDI with Ultrix 4.0

Here are some more answers:

> (1) which version of ULTRIX will support FDDI (on DS 5000)?

Should be Ultrix V4.1 unless another slip occurs.

but are there any lower interfaces?

UDP will also work. DECnet Phase V for sure.

The max transfer rate you can get out of the DS5000 is about 33
Mbps using UDP is a the lower level protocol. TCP/IP will only crank
out about 18 Mbps. This is based on the FDDI demo we used at DECworld.

    re: .-1: FDDI/DS 5000 performance figures

Keep in mind that those numbers reflect an application that does
no disk I/O and very little computing besides pushing bits onto
the fiber (I'd guess <5% cpu to (un)paint the bricks).

Not exactly a real world benchmark.

V4.1 only has latent support for FDDI. It won't be supported until a
later relase of ULTRIX. DLI is the lowest level interface to FDDI.

DECnet-ULTRIX Phase IV kind of works on FDDI but isn't supported.

DECnet-ULTRIX Phase V will support FDDI.

LAT also works over FDDI as well.
