| FWIW, a summary of the replies I've gotten via internal email is
that we/DEC expect IBM to come out with "something sometime" soon.
For example a direct CC (3172?) and FEP (3745?) interface to FDDI,
and in this way support higher level SNA protocols over the FDDI
data link layer.
I have received no better estimates than that.

101.2 | Anything new regarding BIG BLUE's FDDI plans? | VAXRIO::ROLF | | Thu May 09 1991 09:56 | 16 |
| Wonder if we know anything more about IBM's FDDI plans by now? I
visited a customer yesterday who is likely to contract a very large
DECconnect installation from us with 3 VAXen hooked together by
FDDI and talking to the terminals via the new BECbridge-600.
That customer also has a lot of IBM stuff and would love to have
a way to connect the IBM system directly into the FDDI ring, rather
than doing it in the conventional Gateway method, hooking into one of
the Ethernets.
That customer also mentioned that he had heard about a "box" which
would connect IBM to FDDI, but had no specifics.
Any info welcome! Thanks!

| The rumor is IBM will annouce a 3745 Front End Processor with FDDI
attachment at the ICA show in June (same show we're announcing Phase V
and Hastings).

We have just come across a bid in the U.K, were IBM were bidding FDDI
con and Etherent bridges. They would not commit definately to a deliver
date of August. The customer tells me the IBM promised kit is very
similar to ours.

| I support a Corporate Account that has asked us whether IBM's ESCON (their
version of our VAXcluster architecture) can connect to any of our FDDI
offerings. They want to be able to ship lots of data out of the IBM cluster
into a high-volume printserver and they think FDDI is what they need.
Who would be a good person to contact to discuss the feasibility of this. The
customers we're dealing with are high-level research engineers (PHDs) and so
we will probably need to get fairly technical in our description if it can be
done.

| If IBM supports FDDI (I don't know if they do in general, nor for ESCON
in particular) then the answer should be yes. You'll need to find out
what IBM claims to support.
