Could anyone explain why and how IP fragmentation works. I understand the theory of IP fragmentation but do not understand why it needs to be done going from Ethenret - FDDI - Ethernet. Any documentation on the subject would also be helpful Gary

You're right, in that situation it does not need to be done. It is needed for the case FDDI - Ethernet - FDDI. That may sound like a strange case, but it applies when you have small clumps of high end workstations on FDDI, each connected to an existing Ethernet building backbone. If you talk from one clump to the other, the transport layer (TCP) would select FDDI-sized packets. paul |
