87.0. "FDDI-to-FDDI Bridge/Router?" by ZPOV01::HWCHOY (FE110000) Sun Jul 08 1990 23:21

    Is there any plans for an FDDI-FDDI bridge or router?

    The primary reason for doing this is to segregate traffic to sub-FDDI
    LANs. People are concerned that if we run a VAXcluster over FDDI, then
    there may not be enough bandwidth if we also put couple of hundred
    workstations with workgroup servers. What I'm looking for would be:

      o o o main Ring                     o o o local ring (with servers
     o     o                             o     o            and  workstations)
    o       o-------------x-------------o       o
     o     o                             o     o
      o o o                               o o o

    o = concentrators
    x = FDDI-FDDI Bridge/Router

    If such a product does not exist or planned, can I compromise using
    DECbridge 500s like so:

      o o o main Ring                     o o o local ring (with servers
     o     o                             o     o            and  workstations)
    o       o----x====+       +====x----o       o
     o     o          |       |          o     o
      o o o           |       |           o o o
                     +---------+
                     |  DELNI  |
                     +---------+

    x = DECbridge 500

    I understand the bottleneck at the Ethernet, but we are assuming that
    intersite traffic load is acceptabel on Ethernet.

As far as possible future FDDI-FDDI bridge/router products go, you should
talk to either of Neville (JANUS::) Fleet, part of CBN business management,
or Jim (DELNI::) Capobianco, a product manager in the LAN group.

...and as for a "place holder" available today, the bottom picture you
showed (back to back LANbridge-500s) will work just fine, at a 10
Mbit/second rate of course.

    Why te DELNI ??
    use the Thinwire port of the Bridges, and just connect a short segment.
